These delicious and easy to make flaxseed crackers are not only a healthy option for snacking, but taste absolutely delicous to load up with healthy dips or to take on a picnic or hike.
These flax seed crackers are so easy to make, and really only require 3 main ingredients, with a few other optional seasonings to really make them sing. They're naturally gluten-free, high in fiber and Omega-3, a good source of protein, plus are the perfect 3pm snack to have on hand when you need a little something savory to nibble on. By using ground flaxseed, you help your digestive system absorb all the nutritients from the seeds.
I love making my own crackers as you can control what goes into them and you can season to your own taste buds and what you happen to have in your pantry. Why not give my Crispy Chickpea Flour Crackers a try, or these delicous Superseed Wholeseed Chia and Flax Seed Crackers a try too.

🍘Ingredients
Here are the simple ingredients you'll need to make these crackers: Technically you could make these with just flaxseeds and water, however the seasonings and other additions add flavor and extra deliciousness.

- Whole Flax seeds : ideally use whole flaxseeds and blend them up in your blender to create milled flaxseeds for maximum freshness, however you can also use pre-ground flax seed meal for this. (NB: flaxseed is also sometimes called linseed.)
- Water: You'll need just enough water to bind the crackers together.
- Sea Salt: A sprinkle of flakey sea salt to taste
- Olive oil: A little drizzle of extra virgin olive oil adds to the flavor and crispiness, but is optional.
- Baking Powder: A little baking powder helps keep the crackers light and not too hard.
- Fresh Rosemary: To taste. You could also add other herbs like sage, italian seasoning mix or thyme.
- Garlic Powder or Onion powder or other seasonings to taste(see Substitutions and Variations section for ideas)
See recipe card for quantities.
👩🍳Instructions
Follow along with these step by step photos for the perfect crispy flax crackers.

1 & 2: Grind the flaxseeds in your blender or using the grinding attachment on your foodprocessor.

3. Pour all the ingredients except the water into a large bowl and mix to distribute evenly.
4. Add water tablespoon at a time and mix until you have a thick but not too wet mixture. (about 80ml water)

5. Line a baking sheet with a sheet of parchment paper and spread out the flax cracker mixture.
6. Put another sheet of parchment paper over the top and use a rolling pin to evenly roll out the cracker mixture to a 3mm depth

7. Score the crackers into somewhat even squares. You can add any extra seeds or toppings at this point to, pushing them into the cracker dough.
Bake in the oven at 180c/360f for 25 minutes or until crispy.
Hint: you might need to remove the parchment from the baking sheet to roll the crackers out- depending on how wide your rolling pin is.
🌶️Substitutions & Variations
Here are some great ways you can switch up this recipe or add other flavors:
- Pumpkin seeds or Sunflower Seeds -press these larger seeds into the top of the flax dough before baking.
- Sesame seeds and chia seeds -add up to 50g of each of these seeds into the flaxseed cracker mixture before mixing in the water.
- DIfferent flavor ideas: - sprinkle over bagel seasoning, add in smoked paprika and/or nutritional yeast. Sprinkle on any dried seasoning powder- why not try za'atar, tajin or furikake - before baking.
🔪Equipment
You'll need a blender or food processor with a spice or grain grinding attachment, plus a baking sheet, a rolling pin and two sheets of parchment (baking paper) to make these yummy crackers.
🫙Storage
These flaxseed crackers store for up to 3 weeks in an airtight container. You can probably keep them for longer, however I haven't managed to test them for longer as we eat them all up before then!
Top tip
These crackers are delicious when served with hummus or other dips. My particular favourite combination is with this Dill Pickle Hummus.

- 1 teaspoon flakey sea salt (or to taste)
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon rosemary (freshly chopped)
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 80 ml water (added bit by bit. )
Instructions
- Grind the flaxseeds in your blender, or using the spice or seed grinder attachment on your food processor.
- Pre-heat your oven to 180℃/360℉
- To a large bowl add the ground flaxseeds, sea salt, baking powder, chopped rosemary, and garlic powder. Mix to combine evenly.
- Bit by bit add water to the flaxseed mixture, mixing well. You want a thick mix that will stay on your mixing spoon.
- Line a baking tray with parchement paper and turn out the flaxseed cracker mixture onto it. Roughly smooth out the cracker mixture with a spatula.
- Lay a second piece of parchment paper (baking paper) over the top of the cracker mixture, and use a rolling pin to rolll out the mixture to around 3-4mm thick.
- You might need to remove the parchement & cracker mixture from the baking tray to achieve this- depending on how wide your rolling pin is.
- Add the cracker mixture back to the tray still sandwiched between the two sheets of parchment.
- Remove the top sheet of parchment, then use a sharp knife or rolling cutter to score lines into the crackers lengthways and widthways to create rough squares.
- Add any extra toppings to the crackers (optional) and tamp them down a little with a spatula.
- Put the crackers into the oven at 180℃/360℉ for 30 minutes or until crispy. Leave to dry out and cool down in the oven for a few hours.
- Snap apart the crackers and eat with hummus or store in an airtight container.
